Short description of Freud course
This course, which will be based on a close reading of some of Freud’s most important shorter papers, will begin with a short historical account of the understandings of psychopathology which preceded that of Freud. It will continue by way of a discussion of how Freud’s ‘encounter with hysteria’, led him to formulate the basic concepts that remain to this day distinctively psychoanalytic in form and content.
The specific topics to be covered in the component include; the nature and significance of the Freudian unconscious and its role in psychic life, the origins, status and meaning of symptoms and the role of sexuality in the aetiology of neurosis. The course will conclude with a discussion of the key ingredients of psychoanalytic practice as envisaged by Freud including; the role of the analyst, symptom interpretation, free association and the analysis of the transference.
